Made far from Austria, but recognisably Grüner Veltliner, this impressive expression of the variety is made by talented winemaker Thys Louw in Durbanville, south of Cape Town. Diemersdal planted South Africa's first Grüner vineyard back in 2010, and it remains the only one to this day. After fermentation in stainless steel, the wine is given six months on lees to add weight and texture. The nose is fairly restrained but you can find notes of white pepper, red apple and spice, with a hint of lime, and a long, mineral finish. Elegant and structured, and a good partner for Asian cuisine. Mix-six price: £11.50.
